There was tension in Ede, Osun State, on Tuesday as youths chased officials of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) out and locked the company’s office.
It was gathered that the action was reportedly taken over poor electricity supply in the area, which residents said has negatively affected businesses and economic activities.
In a statement signed by President of Ede Youth Development Association (FEYDA), Afolabi Waliu Abiola, explained that the decision to lock the IBEDC office was taken to stop the company from operating while residents continued to experience prolonged power outages.
The group stated that previous interventions had only led to temporary promises, with power supply failing to improve despite repeated assurances.
It added that the office would remain shut until there is a significant improvement in electricity supply to Ede.
FEYDA also noted that its action was aimed at preventing residents from being shortchanged or extorted, stressing that the persistent power outage has led to the collapse of businesses and a decline in the town’s local economy.
The youth group assured residents that it would continue to engage on the issue and provide updates as developments unfold.
Efforts to get a reaction from the IBEDC Ede office were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
