Grammy-Award winner Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun professionally known as Wizkid has disclosed why he said he is not an Afrobeats artiste.
On Friday March 15th 2024, Wizkid, the “Joro” crooner gets social media abuzz as he disclosed that he is not an Afrobeat artiste asserting that anyone who calls him such a name is a hoe or a bitch.
According to the singer, Afrobeats listeners should never make an attempt in downloading his forthcoming album named after his later mother dubbed “Morayo”.
In his words; “Album done, see you soon bitches. Zion richer than you niggas lol!. And pls Abeg if you like Pakurumo Wizkid don’t download this new album..in fact delete me from ur playlist and your life.”
“And if you like Afrobeats, pls don’t download my album.”
“I’m not fvcking Afrobeats artiste, don’t call me that hoe. I’m not Afro Anything bitch.”
However, this development did not sit well with many as many dragged the singer over his statement.
In a lengthy post, Wizkid however reveals why he said he is not just an Afrobeat artiste. The award winning singer averred that he makes so many music/sounds that to be labelled in a box as an Afrobeats artiste.
Giving an example, Wizkid said that it will be stupid to say All American artistes are rappers because they came from the United States of America.
Wizkid said that he has made different songs from different genre of music and by extension clarified that his record breaking album “Made in Lagos” is not an Afrobeats album.
Wizkid wrote; “U lost people always want someone to educate you. U got your phone Google research shit or take a flight and see the world don’t be ignorant and stupid all the time Listen, am I African ? Yes! But I do make all sorts of music. Fine music! But I don’t want these labeled just afrobeats. That’s like saying every American artiste makes rap. That’s stupid.
“This is why no matter how good or amazing the music we make be it RnB or whatever other genre, we all get nominated in one Africa category or the other. I’ve made songs from different genres of music. Made in Lagos is not an “Afrobeats beats” album. Thats a fusion of different sounds. Real music!
“The word afrobeats was made up by y’all to put all we make into one box. Fela created afrobeat!! I make All sorts of music. Fusion of sounds! “I’m an artiste” before anything else.. True to my art. Not scared to try shit. Now y’all drink some milk!”
