A Lagos-based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), Techance, has commenced free Tech Skills training for children ranging from age six to 16 years in Osun State, AMILOADED reports.
Techance Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Ms Temidayo Adeoye, explained that the main objective of her group was to educate children in different range of tech skills from coding to non-coding skills.
While disclosing that her team has already visited two Lagos Schools, Western College and St. Finbarrs College, Igbobi for orientation, she noted that this was one of the ways her NGO decided to give back to the society.
According to her, the NGO is working with some selected public and private schools in Ile-Ife, Osun State.
“Tech skills give children access to not only vocational skills, which are often the go-to skills for children from low income households, but tech skills that they can scale to a career in the future.
“To put things into perspective, Nigeria and other African countries are one of the under represented groups in the field of technology and given the economic challenge in our region, tech skills is even harder to acquire.
“This is where Techance wants to make a change, by providing digital and tech literacy to children in Nigerian schools considering the fact that this has not being part of a conventional school curricular,” Adeoye stated.
The CEO disclosed that the training was being carried out by organising orientation seminars, intensive training, hackathons, workshops and mentorship programmes.
Beside Techance, according to her, has a community for participants to collaborate and partner on projects as well as opportunity to gain professional experience through internships.
She added, “Every aspect of what we do is free and is at no cost to the learner or school, which makes our services available to all who wants it.”
