‘New Tax Laws Are Designed To Promote Fairness’ – Gov Adeleke

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has declared open a three-day retreat on the implementation of the new tax laws aimed at strengthening revenue generation and improving tax administration in the state.

The retreat, organised by the Osun State Internal Revenue Service, is holding at the Centre for Black Culture and International Understanding, Oke-Pupa, Abere.

Speaking at the event on Tuesday, Governor Adeleke stated that taxation remains the most dependable and sustainable source of public revenue required for infrastructure development, social services delivery, institutional strengthening and economic growth.

The governor explained that the newly introduced tax laws were designed to promote fairness, widen the tax net and enhance compliance through transparency, efficiency and digital innovation.

He noted that the tax reform framework adopted by the state government is business-friendly and supportive of investment, while recognising the contribution of small and medium-scale enterprises to economic development and job creation.

The governor also introduced measures to integrate the informal sector into the formal economy through gradual and supportive policies aimed at strengthening revenue without disrupting business activities.

Governor Adeleke disclosed that the new tax laws include provisions for reliefs, exemptions and reduced rates to protect low-income earners and maintain a balance between revenue growth and citizens’ welfare.

He emphasised that the success of the tax reforms depends largely on effective implementation through collaboration among government agencies, the legislature, tax professionals, revenue administrators and the business community.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the utilisation of public funds, linking improved tax compliance to visible government projects in education, healthcare, infrastructure and social welfare.

In his address, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Taxes, Hon. Kamarudeen Ajisafe Kosolowoe, described the retreat as a strategic engagement aimed at simplifying tax compliance and expanding the tax base in line with modern fiscal realities.

Kosolowoe stated that the stakeholders’ engagement brought together representatives from government institutions, the private sector, civil society organisations and professional bodies to develop strategies for effective implementation of the new tax law.

He noted that the retreat is expected to address implementation challenges, improve public trust in the tax system and position the new tax law as a driver of economic development and fiscal sustainability in Osun State.
