A non-governmental organization, Matermental, has organized a dental health and personal hygiene program for over 150 children with autism and special needs.
The program was held on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at the school for special needs children in Iwo, Osun State.
The organization also donated ₦50,000, personal hygiene items, and dental supplies.
The program was well attended by teachers and parents of the beneficiaries, who received health education, free check-ups, scaling, polishing, and other dental treatments.
Speaking with AMILOADED TV, Matermental’s Founder, Dr. Adeola Folorunso, stated that the program aimed to ensure children with special needs receive adequate oral care and sensitize parents to monitor their children’s dental health.
Dr. Adeola thanked the teachers and the school principal for their support in making the program possible. She urged policymakers, healthcare providers, and leaders to support children with autism and special needs, particularly in dental healthcare.
Also speaking, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, the Oluwo of Iwo, commended Matermental’s founder and the school principal for helping special needs children. He urged the Federal Government to allocate more funds for special needs and encouraged President Tinubu and governors to support these children in achieving their dreams.
In his own words, Dr. Oluwafemi Ogunsakin, a dental health therapist, noted that special needs children have unique features that make them resistant to toothbrushes, emphasizing the need for proper care to prevent dental problems.
The school principal, Mr. Salawu Abiodun, thanked the program organizers and appealed to the government to intervene with healthcare programs and other initiatives to improve the pupils’ lives.
The beneficiaries’ parents expressed gratitude to the organizers, stating they learned new things about health education through the program.
