Kwara Poly Student In Tears As Department Changes Her Course

By: Thomas Abidoye

A Higher National Diploma (HND) student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Adekanye Ayomide Elizabeth, has cried out for help over a sudden change affecting her academic program.

In a Facebook post made on Monday, Elizabeth revealed that students of Journalism and Media Studies are being forced to abandon their course midway and switch to Strategic Communication.

According to her, the students had already completed their first semester, bought textbooks, attended lectures, written tests, and sat for examinations before the shocking development.

Expressing her frustration, Elizabeth said the decision was unfair and described it as an act of manipulation and departmental politics that threatens their future careers.

“We chose Journalism because we believe in the power of storytelling, of truth, of the media,” she lamented, adding that the students had worked hard and invested their dreams into the program.

She questioned why students should be made to suffer despite following all academic procedures diligently and called for intervention from authorities.

The embattled student urged the Kwara Polytechnic management, the Ministry of Education, the press, and the general public to intervene and help them reclaim their course of study.

“Our futures are being tampered with,” Elizabeth warned, insisting that they deserve the right to finish what they started.

All efforts to get the reaction of the school management proved abortive as at the press time, while the Mass Communication Department President was not reachable.

Her post reads, “We, the students of Journalism and Media Studies at Kwara Polytechnic, are crying out for justice.

“After completing a first semester — buying textbooks, attending lectures, writing tests and exams — we are now being told to abandon our course and move to Strategic Communication.

“This is NOT fair. This is NOT right.
We chose Journalism because we believe in the power of storytelling, of truth, of the media. We worked hard, we sacrificed, and we invested our dreams into this course.

“Now, because of manipulation and departmental politics, our futures are being tampered with.

“Why should students suffer after doing everything right? Why should we be forced to start all over again, buying new textbooks, learning new materials, and losing everything we’ve worked for?

“We call on the Management of Kwara Polytechnic, the #ministryofeducation Education, #thepress, and the general public .Please hear our cry. Save our course. Save our future.

“We deserve the right to finish what we started.

“We still want to remain in Journalism and Media Studies. We don’t want to be merged or be offering Strategic Communication courses.

“We came here for Journalism, we are passionate about Journalism, and we want to graduate with a Journalism and Media Studies certificate.

“We need the management to work on getting Journalism accredited for us.
We did not sign up for Strategic — we signed up for Journalism, and we deserve to complete what we started!”

Elizabeth’s post, which has gone viral, has generated lots of mixed reactions.
