The Shari’a Court sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna, Kaduna State, has ordered a divorce-seeking woman, Rubayya Muhammad, to present her parents in court over dowry controversy.
Rubayya, who is also a nursing mother, had prayed court to dissolve her marriage with her husband, Isiya Baba, through Khul’i, saying she was ready to return the N150,000 dowry she received in exchange for divorce.
Khul’i refers to a divorce procedure under Islamic law where a woman can initiate a separation from her husband by returning her dowry to the husband.
She, therefore, said she would use the dowry to feed their two-month-old baby.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the defendant, however, said he paid N350,000 dowry and not N150,000 as claimed by the woman.
The witnesses from the defendant also told the court that they took the dowry to the complainant’s parents, confirming it was N350,000 and not N150,000.
Thereafter, the judge, Mu’awiya Shehu, asked the complainant who received the dowry and she said her father did.
He then ordered her to present her parents on February 3 for confirmation.
