The Director of the Centre for Black Culture and International Understanding, Prof. Siyan Oyeweso, has called on State Governments across Nigeria to prioritize the development of cultural heritage in their regions.
Oyeweso made the call at a recent event titled “Osun-Osogbo Festival” and held the centre in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
He said the Osun-Osogbo festival would help to boost tourism and local economies in Osun State, calling for a comprehensive approach to benefiting from cultural heritage in the state.
The centre director said such festival would bring together experts, practitioners, stakeholders, and academics to devise strategies to harness the economic potential associated with the Osun-Osogbo Festival, the river, and the goddess.
Oyeweso, however, urged governments to recognize that cultural heritage, rather than technology, holds the key to the continent’s economic development and growth.
The Head of the History Department at Obafemi Awolowo University, Dr. Saheed Amusa, while speaking on the significance of the UNESCO-recognized sacred grove at Osun-Osogbo, called for preserving the sacred grove as a major tourist attraction that could generate revenue and attract visitors interested in the spiritual and historical aspects of the festival.
