[BREAKING] Ritual: Erin People to Steal Livestock, Loot Shops In Ilesa Saturday

The new Owa-Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Isaac Haastrup, has issued a public notice regarding a traditional cleansing ritual set to take place, Saturday, April 19, in Ilesa.

The announcement was made on his official Facebook page.

According to the monarch, the Erin people will carry out the age-old cleansing rite, during which stealing of livestock and looting of shops is considered culturally permissible as part of the tradition.

This controversial aspect of the ritual has raised eyebrows among residents.

Citizens have been strongly advised to keep their animals, including goats, cows, dogs, fowls, and even cats, out of sight to avoid losing them to the masquerade and its followers during the exercise.

Men are also warned against wearing any form of headgear to avoid being flogged by the ritualists, who will roam the streets in full ceremonial display.

The Statement reads, “Today, Saturday, April 19, the Erin people will perform the cleansing ritual rite in Ilesa, during which stealing of livestock and looting of shops is allowed as part of the cleansing rite.

“Residents are advised to keep their goats, dogs, fowls, cows and cats away from the sight of the masquerade.

“In order to prevent being flogged by the ritualists, men should also refrain from wearing headgear.”
