‘Are Nigerian  Roads Set Up To Extort People?’ – Australia Man Laments

An Australian Writer, Mark Pollard has sparked widespread debate online after sharing his frustrating experience while traveling through Nigeria.

In a viral video posted on X (formerly Twitter) by @AsakyGRN, Pollard alleged that he was repeatedly asked to give out cash while entering and leaving the country.

Expressing his frustration, he questioned what he described as a pattern of extortion.

In his words: “Nigerians, is your entire country set up to extort people? Coming in and out of the airports, I was told ‘now you give me cash’ at least ten times.

According to him, the experience was not limited to the airport alone, as he claimed that multiple police checkpoints along major roads also demanded money under the guise of routine security checks.

His comments quickly gained traction online, triggering mixed reactions from Nigerians.

While some social media users defended the country and argued that not all security officials engage in such practices, others admitted that corruption and unofficial levies at checkpoints remain a persistent issue.

One commentator wrote, “This is sadly true, checkpoints everywhere just to extort people.” Another added, “We need proper accountability in security agencies.”

The viral clip has since opened a broader conversation about corruption, accountability, and the experiences of foreigners traveling within Nigeria.
