There was a mild drama at the Ooni of Ife’s 10th Coronation Anniversary in Osun State when Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, interrupted Governor Ademola Adeleke during his speech.
The event, held on Sunday, December 7, 2025, marked the 10th year of Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi’s reign. As part of the celebration, the Ooni conferred the title of Yeye Asiwaju Oodua on the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu.
Despite the colourful atmosphere, a brief moment of tension unfolded between the First Lady and Governor Adeleke while he was speaking.
A video from the event shows Adeleke singing as part of his address, a style many of his supporters find entertaining. But the First Lady seemed displeased with the diversion. She stood up, walked toward him, and told him to focus on his remarks and not “waste time.”
She was heard saying in Yoruba, “ma pa lẹ e mo,” meaning she would “pack up” or cut short his speech.
Governor Adeleke nodded, chuckled slightly, and continued, while Mrs. Tinubu returned to her seat.
The video has sparked wide reactions online, with many describing the moment as both surprising and awkward.
Adebayo O Shefiu wrote: “I was really shocked when the First Lady said ‘ma pa lẹ e mo.’ Someone in the crowd even murmured, ‘Which kind thing be this?’ It showed people were already tired of the delay. Still, there are better and more respectful ways to correct someone. Very embarrassing, this is a case of weyrey la’n fin wo weyrey.”
Soa Olaribigbe commented: “My toes curled in embarrassment seeing the way Remi Tinubu sharply told him to hurry up, like she was scolding a child. Shameful.”
Olukunle Durodolu said: “This man is never serious, carefree and faaji-loving. How can a whole state be committed to someone like this? First Lady had to caution him publicly. Shameful!”
Hon Jimoh Abayomi had a different view: “No matter the situation, praising God should not be seen as a barrier. The First Lady’s action was disrespectful to God. Maybe she meant it personally toward the governor, but she ended up insulting God unknowingly.”
On the other hand, Omogbolahan Abass Adisa strongly criticised the First Lady: “Remi Tinubu is very stupid for approaching a whole governor like that, like husband, like wife. That’s the governor’s personality and it doesn’t affect his performance. In fact, that’s what makes people love him more. Not liking someone doesn’t mean everyone shares your view. How can a First Lady talk to a governor like that? Disgusting and unacceptable.”
He also scolded those defending her, adding: “It’s shameful how some Osun people are mocking their own governor just to defend political interests. Something she would never dare with some other governors.”
