The Red Cross Society in Osun State has called for greater support from philanthropists and humanitarian actors to enhance its efforts in delivering relief and essential services to those in need.

Speaking at a press conference in Osogbo on Thursday, Elder Sanya Olopade, the number one citizen of the Red Cross in the South-West and Osun State, highlighted the organization’s achievements while commemorating the 2025 World Red Cross Day.

According to him, the annual celebration, held every May 8th, marks the birth of Red Cross founder, Sir Jean Henry Dunant.

He affirmed that this year’s theme, “On The Side Of Humanity,” underscores the organization’s commitment to protecting human life and dignity in times of crisis.

Elder Olopade emphasized that the Red Cross remains a frontline responder during disasters, conflicts, and health emergencies.

The Red Cross Leader noted that the Osun branch has actively partnered with the government and agencies such as Osun Emergency Management Agency (OSEMA) to provide aid during communal clashes like the Ifon-Ilobu and Erin-Osun crises.

In the area of healthcare, Elder Olapade said the Red Cross has delivered medical outreach services, health education, and first aid assistance across the state, among others to complement state government initiatives in reaching underserved communities.

He also stated that the organization has been instrumental in disease control, conducting house-to-house sensitizations, road shows, and radio programs aimed at curbing outbreaks such as Diphtheria, Mpox, and Measles in Osun.

Elder Olopade used the opportunity to appreciate volunteers, staff, and partners who have continued to work selflessly in advancing the mission of the Red Cross both locally and globally.

“As we celebrate World Red Cross Day, we recognize the tireless efforts of Red Cross volunteers, staff, and partners who work tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of others. Together, we can continue to uphold the principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality.”

He urged well-meaning individuals, corporate organizations, and donors to partner with the Red Cross in sustaining its humanitarian services across Osun State and beyond.

“We hereby call on Humanitarian and philanthropist in the State to Join the Society and support the Red Cross’s humanitarian work and make a difference in the lives of those in need.”

Speaking earlier, the Branch Secretary of the Nigerian Red Cross, Osun State Branch, Tolulope Oguneye, said Red Cross Week is an annual event celebrated across the globe.

He confirmed that the celebration has begun ahead of May 8 with a series of activities.
