4 Killed as Political Thugs Attack PDP Meeting in Ogun

No fewer than four members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were killed when suspected political thugs attacked a party meeting in Ogun State.

The incident occurred on February 28, 2023, leaving the community deserted as residents fled for safety.

Speaking during a telephone interview, PDP Southwest Treasurer Ogunse Omotoyosi Adeodun confirmed he was at the meeting when the attack occurred and narrowly escaped unharmed.

Adeodun accused the ruling All Progressives Congress and its supporters of orchestrating the violence. He said his criticism of the APC government for alleged corruption, human rights abuses and misrule, including claims the 2023 general election was rigged, had made him a target.

The party official said he had faced repeated threats and attacks since speaking out and that the latest assault left him fearing for his life, stressing that security agencies have failed to offer him protection.

A family member of one of the deceased victims, who identified herself as Mojisola, said the attack had thrown the family into mourning. She described the victim as the breadwinner of the household, adding that the family has been left helpless following the killing.

When reporters visited the scene, traces of blood were seen while houses around the vicinity were deserted. A resident, who requested anonymity, confirmed the incident and noted that police patrol teams were arresting people in connection with the attack.

The Ogun State Police Command, when contacted, confirmed that investigations are ongoing. However, the command did not confirm whether the suspects behind the killings were members of the APC.

When contacted, the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja confirmed the incident, alleging that it was APC thugs who attacked its members. The party rejected what it described as a barbaric act, noting that democracy is in danger in Nigeria.

It also affirmed that it has credible information that the PDP Southwest Treasurer, Ogunse, has managed to escape from the country as his life is in serious danger. The party added that an official statement on the incident will be released soon.
