Four female inmates of the Edo State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service were among candidates that wrote the June/July 2024 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE).
According to report, the four inmates were among the six inmates that enrolled for the examination conducted by the National Examination Council of Nigeria (NECO).
The Command said the inmates are of the Custodial Facility in Auchi, the administrative headquarters of Etsako West Local Government Area.
A statement by SC Aminu Suleman, the Public Relations Officer of the Command, said while the four inmates sat for the examinations, the other two did not sit for the examination because they legally regained freedom from Custody before the commencement of the examinations.
Suleman said the inmates began their educational studies by attending adult literacy classes at the Female Custodial Facility.
He added that the Deputy Controller of Corrections in charge of the Facility, DCC Odoh Jane, congratulated the inmates for the milestone achievement.
Jane who said she was very proud of the inmates, eulogized their resilience and dedication to be better citizens.
She posited that the Nigerian Correctional Service under the leadership of CGCS Haliru Nababa is poised to ensure the rehabilitation and reformation of inmates through various means including educational training, skills acquisition and sports, among others.
She explained that the Controller of Corrections, Edo State Command, Emehinola Philomena has assured of continued support to all the inmates in the quest to achieve successful reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration into the society.
The Deputy Controller of Corrections advised the inmates, “When you regain freedom, make sure you further your studies, excel and contribute your quota toward a better society.”
Responding on behalf other inmates, Miss Mercy expressed gratitude to the Controller General of Corrections and other management for a dream come true and promised to be ambassadors of change.
