Gateway Poly: Suspected Fraudster Beats Girlfriend To Death Over Money

AMILOADED MEDIA HUB NEWS UPDATE

A suspected fraudster, John Obeta, has allegedly killed his girlfriend, Idowu Buhari, at Sapade, in the Remo North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

It was gathered that Buhari, an HND 1 student of the Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Sapade, and her boyfriend were together when an argument bordering on money ensued between them.

According to Punch report, during the argument, it was learnt that Obeta accused his girlfriend of refusing to relinquish the money one of his clients paid into her account.

The argument was said to have degenerated and Obeta allegedly killed Buhari.

After perpetrating the crime, Obeta reportedly hid Buhari’s corpse under the bunk of his bed as he waited for a time to dispose of his girlfriend’s body without anyone noticing.

It was gathered that neighbours who became concerned about Buhari’s whereabouts following the argument with her boyfriend found her corpse under Obeta’s bunk.

Following the discovery, the neighbours alongside residents in the area, who became angered by Obeta’s action, pounced on him.

The mob was on the brink of lynching Obeta when policemen intervened, rescued him and took him to the station.

In a trending video clip, policemen were seen taking the suspect away from the scene in their patrol vehicle.

A picture attached to the video clip showed Buhari lying lifeless on the ground opposite a bed. Blood stains were seen on her face as a deep cut was sighted around her neck.

A source told Punch correspondent that the undergraduate recently met Obeta, adding that the suspect was not a student of the institution.

The source said, “I was at the police station yesterday on this issue. They just met themselves not quite long. The guy is a Yahoo boy and he sells goods. But from what we gathered, the guy beat the girl to death because of his client’s money.

“The guy’s name is John Obeta; he is not a student, he just came to rent a house around the area. The house is a big building; the guy was not the only one living there and it is nemesis that caught up with him.”

Contacted, the Students Union President of the institution, Ibrahim Najim, said, “We learnt one of our students was killed by her boyfriend; we are still trying to get more information about the circumstances surrounding her death, I will get back to you.”

Reacting to the development, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement on Wednesday, said after receiving a distress call about the incident, the DPO Ode-Remo Division led his men to the scene where they met Buahri’s lifeless body in a pool of blood.

He said, “The suspect locked himself and his girlfriend inside his room and started beating the girl and hitting her head against the wall. All efforts made to persuade him to open the door proved abortive.

“Upon receiving the distress call, the DPO Ode-Remo Division, CSP Fasogbon Olayemi, quickly led his men to the scene where they met the victim in a pool of her blood after forcing the door open.

“The victim was quickly rushed to the state hospital in Ishara, but was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty. The suspect, an indigene of Enugu State, was promptly arrested and taken to custody.

“On interrogation, the suspect, John Obeta, informed the police that he is an internet fraudster, and that a certain amount of money from one of his clients was paid into the account of his deceased girlfriend which she refused to relinquish to him.”

Oyeyemi said Obeta stated further that it was the argument over the money that led to a scuffle between them which eventually led to the death of the girl.

Oyeyemi, however, said the state Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, had ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and diligent prosecution.
