The Osun State Commissioner for Education, Hon. Folorunsho Oladoyin, has stressed that the administration of Governor Adegboyega Oyetola has taken various steps that will reposition the state’s education sector for better results, AMILOADED reports.
Oladoyin said this on Monday while addressing a press conference organised to acquaint the general public particularly parents/guardians with salient issues in the education sector as the 2022/2023 academic session commences.
The commissioner said a number of measures have been introduced by the Ministry of Education on behalf of the state government all in a bid to improve on the standard of education in the State.
He said the measures include the introduction of a centralised admission system involving re-introduction of Placement Examinations (Common Entrance Exams) for candidates intending to gain admission into JSS 1 and SSS 1 of Public Secondary Schools respectively.
The commissioner added that the new admission process was introduced with a view to standardizing and sanitising the process of admitting teachable students into the state’s Secondary Schools.
The former lawmaker who maintained that the landmark decision has put an end to automatic promotion hitherto in operation in the state noted that those who pass will be admitted into SSS 1 in Public Secondary Schools across the state while those who fail the examination will be categorized as repeaters.
Oladoyin added that promotion from SSS 2 to SSS 3 in public Secondary Schools has been based on 40% pass mark in five subjects including Mathematics and English Language.
He said, “An Examination Committee headed by the Honourable Commissioner for Education who doubles as the Chairman of the board with membership drawn from the Ministry of Education, OSEB, Tutors-General and the leadership ANCOPSS decided on pass marks of 30% and 45% for placement into JSS 1 and SSS 1 respectively at its meeting held on Thursday, 15th September, 2022.
“Based on these agreed pass marks, out of 24,372 candidates that sat for the placement examination into JSS 1, 23,685 passed while 687 failed representing 97.18% and 2.82% respectively. Also, 19,479 passed while 4,893 failed the placement examination into SSS 1 out of 24,572 candidates thereby giving 79.92% pass and 20.08% failure respectively.”
Speaking on the ongoing teachers’ recruitment, the commissioner said in a bid to address the causative factors responsible for poor performance in external examinations the government decided to recruit 2,500 new teachers in all.
He said the state government has also introduced the Board of Governors in schools to collaborate with school heads for better result-oriented management of the schools as well as strengthening the supervisory departments of the ministry and relevant agencies.
