Police Begin Manhunt As Suspected Cultists Kill Youth President, Injure Others

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has lunched manhunt as suspected cultists on Tuesday killed the youth President of Atai Ibiaku community in the Itu Local Government Area of the state, Mr. Edet Ibanga, and injured several others.

It was gathered that late Ibanga was shot in his chest by the hoodlums around 1am after he breezed into the opposite compound to settle scores not knowing that cultists had invaded the place.

According to sources, Ibanga had settled several misunderstandings in the past in the same compound.

The daughter of the deceased, a 200-level student of Department of Banking/Finance, University of Uyo, Blessing, was too emotional to speak to our correspondent as she repeatedly fought back tears.

However, an eyewitness, M. Imoh Ekim explained that the hoodlums, numbering about 18, had stormed the compound in search of one man, who was having an issue with a girlfriend of one of them.

He said Ibanga was shot by the hoodlums after opening the gate of the house to see what was amiss.

“He was shot in the chest immediately he opened the gate of the compound to enter not knowing that one armed cultist was stationed at the gate,” Ekim said.

He added that the remains of the youths leader had already been deposited in a mortuary in Uyo, the state capital

The Police Public Relations Officer Mr. Odiko Macdon, who confirmed the incident described it as unfortunate and unacceptable, adding that the Commissioner of Police, Andrew Amiengheme has already ordered investigation into the incident.

“We are in receipt of the report of the incident; it is quite unfortunate and unacceptable. The CP has ordered investigation into the matter and in no distant time, the perpetrators will be apprehended,” Macdon assured.
