BREAKING: Court Stops Impeachment Move Against Zamfara Deputy Gov Over Refusal To Defect

A Federal High Court in Abuja has restrained Zamfara Speaker and two others from proceedings with its planned impeachment of Deputy Governor, Mahdi Aliyu Gusau.

Also restrained are‎ the Governor and the Chief Judge.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu gave the restraining order on Monday after listening to Ogwu James Onoja (SAN), who moved a motion ex-parte to that effect, on behalf of the plaintiff in a suit filed in the name of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP)

The judge stopped the Zamfara State House of Assembly members from taking any further step in the impeachment process targeted against the deputy governor over his refusal to decamp from the People Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressive Congress, APC, along with Governor Bello Matawalle.

Justice Egwatu issued the order on Monday in his ruling in an ex-parte application filed by the PDP.

After listening to the arguments canvassed by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief James Onoja Ogwu, the judge held that the apprehension of the applicant in respect of the impeachment move was serious and justified to restrain the defendants from carrying out the alleged action.

The judge also restrained the Chief Judge of Zamfara State from constituting any panel for the purpose of investigating Gusau pending the determination of a motion on notice filed by the PDP.

Other defendants in the matter are Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), APC, the Senate President, the Speaker of House of Representatives, Speaker of Zamfara House of Assembly and Governor Bello Matawalle.
