LAUTECH Reparation Fees: NAUS Condemns Management’s Decision, Demands Immediate Reversal

The National Association of University Students (NAUS) Southwest has condemned the reparation fees imposed by the management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho to the students of the Institution.

AMILOADED recalls that the Senate of LAUTECH at its emergency meeting of Tuesday, June 22, 2021, deliberated extensively on the report of the Investigation Panel on students’ riots of April 22 and 23, 2021 and decided that all regular undergraduate students from 100 to 600-Level during the 2019/2020 academic session should pay a reparation fee of Five Thousand Naira (N5,000.00) only each as a result of the destruction of property in LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, University Health Centre and the University in general.

The payment is also to serve as a deterrent against a future occurrence of such violent behaviour by LAUTECH students.

However, while reacting to the Management’s decision on Wednesday, the Vice President of NAUS Southwest, Comrade Akomolafe Jide-Petkoff(Aare of Peace) in a statement personally signed by him, demanded immediate reversal of the reparation fees imposed on students of LAUTECH, adding that the management will witness further actions beyond paper and pen from NAUS if the Management fails to reverse the reparation fees.

According to his statement, “Our attention was drawn to the closure of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho by students over the imposition of reparation fees on students of the University.

“The reparation fees according to the management became necessary after the last ugly incident which claimed the life of an innocent student of the University due to lackadaisical attitudes displayed by the staff of the University’s health system.

“We are not unaware of various efforts being put in place to ensure the reparation fees is being reveiwed and canceled particularly by the NANS JCC Oyo State which were turned down by the management.

“It is not surprising that the management of LAUTECH insists stylishly on extorting our students via reparation fees as it has become the habits of managements of our various Universities to impose damage fees on us after shows of displeasure by students and as a matter of fact there must be an end to such buffoonery of the managements of our Universities.

“As an Association concerned with prioritization of our members’ interests, we condemn in totality the extortion of our members and the obstinate behavior of LAUTECH management.

“In line with the above, we demand immediate reversal of the reparation fees imposed on students of LAUTECH.

“The management already proved to be insistent on this extortion, it should be noted that a further display of obstinacy by the management will attract the management witnessing further actions beyond paper and pen from our Association.”
