The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Osun State Chapter and the Osun State Police Command on Tuesday disagreed over incessant raids of churches in Osogbo, the state capital of Osun State by suspected robbers.
The CAN Chairman, Bishop Amos Ogunrinde told our correspondent in a phone conversation that many churches in the state capital had been burgled in recent past by robbers.
Ogunrinde also said attack on churches had stopped for a while, only for the men of the underworld to again laid siege on more churches.
According to him, “We have reported to the police, I think one of them was arrested and the case is still in court.
“Some people in Lagos have been begging us that they want to take over the case but we refused. After some arrests were made, the cases of robbery subsided, but now it has started again.
“They robbed All Saints Anglican Cathedral (Balogun Agoro, Osogbo) twice. After the church was robbed, they purchased new instruments and they have not completed payment. But the robbers robbed them again. I don’t know why they are after churches. We need the security of Osun to come to our aid.”
Contrary, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, disclosed that three churches were robbed in Osogbo in October, adding that some interested parties told the police not to charge suspects arrested to court.
“we are aware of three cases of churches that were invaded. All Saints Church, Balogun Agoro, Methodist Church of Living Spring, Isale Aro, and Anglican Bishop Court Church, Youth Chapel, Isale Aro, Osogbo were affected.
“We arrested four persons in connection with the robbery of one of the churches, but the church authority asked us leave them and not to press charge against them,” she said.
