Doyin Okupe, former Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan, has stated why his son is supporting President Muhammadu Buhari for the 2019 general election.
Mr Okupe, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is a leading political figure working for the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar.
On Thursday, his son, Ditan Okupe, expressed interest to join the re-election campaign train of Mr Buhari.
“It is with great pleasure that I use this opportunity to indicate my keen interest in joining your campaign team for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari,” he partly wrote in an epistle addressed to Festus Kayamo, the director-general, Strategic Communications of Buhari’s campaign organisation.
In the letter seen by POLITICS TIMES, the son of the PDP chieftain said there was no better candidate to lead the country now aside Mr Buhari.
This is coming weeks after Abraham Obasanjo, son of former president Olusegun Obasanjo, decided to pitch his tent with the president.
The former Nigerian leader and his son are not in good terms. Same could be said of the Okupes hence the political difference between the parents and their children.
Reacting to the decision of his son, Okupe said the young lad decided to support Mr Buhari because of the conflict between them which dates back to five years ago. He thereafter wished him well.
“Ditan okupe is my Son,” he said in a tweet late Thursday.
“He is a very brilliant young man. He went to Kings college, Lagos, Burkinham university, UK & did post graduate in law at d London school of economics.”
“We both hv had serious issues in the last 5yrs.This may be his way of getting back at me. I wish him luck.”
