Palpable fear has engulfed residents of Ikere-Ekiti, the headquarters of Ikere council area of Ekiti State following the death of six persons in a cult clash.
The incident started on Saturday when one member of a cult group identified as Ojuale was shot dead near Ikere city Hall, Odo Oja area of the town.
It was gathered Ojuale, an indigene of the town, came from Port Harcount on Friday to attend a wedding ceremony before he was killed by rival cult members.
Ojuale’s cult group launched a reprisal attack and unleashed terror by engaging in a shooting spree, forcing many residents to scamper for safety.
A resident of the town, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said five persons had been killed since the attacks started on Saturday night.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Sunday Abutu, confirmed the development, appealing for calm among residents.
Abutu added 10 suspects have been arrested in connection with the bloody cult clash caused by rivalry and show of strength.
The police spokesman confirmed that six persons have died and their bodies deposited in the morgue.
The Nation reporter, who visited the community, observed the police have increased surveillance in the town by conducting stop- and- search on vehicles coming in and out of the town.
