Senator Sikiru Bayo Oshinowo popularly called Peperito died on Monday, June 15, after suffering from an undisclosed ailment.
Oshinowo’s death came as a rude shock to many people especially those who have a close acquaintance with the late senator in Lagos.
Before he got a political promotion into the Senate in 2019, the late lawmaker was a member of the Lagos state House of Assembly between 2003 and 2019.
Although the late senator could not spend more than one year at the red chamber before he answered his creator’s call, there are some things to know about Oshinowo.
1. Oshinowo was a close ally of the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former governor of Lagos, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
2. He singlehandedly installed two speakers at the Lagos state House of Assembly. President Buhari nominates Okonjo-Iweala for top position.
3. Oshinowo was fondly called by his colleagues at the Lagos Assembly “Agba Egbe” – meaning the kingmaker.
4. He was the rallying point for all members of the Lagos Assembly whose opinion was highly respected.
5. Oshinowo was at the forefront of the battle to entrench democratic governance in Nigeria during the military era.
6. He was also in the struggle for the revalidation of June 12 poll, won by Chief MKO Abiola.
7. Osinowo had his primary education at St. Augustin Primary School in Ijebu-Ode and his Secondary Education in Issoyin Grammar School, Isoyin.
8. In 1977, he started his career as a land officer at the federal ministry of works till 1979 before becoming managing director at NITAL International from 1986 to 2003.
9. He was managing director at NIMCO International Co. Ltd from 1990 to 2003. He also worked as managing director, at Extreme Piling and Construction Company Ltd and NIMCO dredging company from 1990 to 2003.
10. Osinowo served as a youth chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the third republic, which kickstarted his political career.
11. He was a devout Muslim.
