An operative of the Ibara prison in Ogun State, Abimbola Johnson foiled the attempted escape of a robbery suspect, Kamoru Adebayo in the state after he shot the suspect in the leg.
22-year-old Adebayo had escaped from a parked black maria, scaled the fence of the State Magistrate Court in Isabo, Abeokuta, before he was shot.
Officer-in-charge of Old Ibara Prison, DCP Kolawole Sunday while speaking to journalists in Abeokuta said the suspect had been remanded in the prison custody during his first arraignment for alleged cultism and robbery by the magistrate.
Sunday added that the incident happened shortly after the police handed over the suspect to the command within the court premises.
According to Sunday, the suspect forcefully opened the door and jumped out of the black maria.
“He scaled the fence of the court and jumped on the roof of the building around the court while he was in handcuffs.
“ASP Sanni Segun who led the team at the court warned the suspect to stop running but, he believed in his fetish power that he could escape.
“After several warnings, he was demobilised in the leg by our robust and gallant prison assistant, Abimbola Johnson to save the command from the embarrassment.
“The situation was well managed because, as the comptroller of prisons in the state, I pay unscheduled visits to my men in courts regularly and the efforts of the Comptroller General, Ja’afaru Ahmed to encourage officers by boosting their morale also aided the efforts.”
