The Olowu of Owu-Kuta and Chairman of Owu traditional council, Oba Hammed Adekunle Makama Tegbosun III has called on Nigerians to give the necessary support to members of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Speaking at a press conference at his palace in Owu-Kuta today (Thursday) he pleaded with Nigerians to ensure that the military does not become the sacrificial lamb for us to sustain our democracy if we do not want to expose the territorial integrity of our country to threats.
“It is now unfashionable for a traditional ruler to restrict himself only to his domain and be non challant towards happenings in his domain and around the nation at large”. He said.
He observed that each time as a nation we approach the electioneering period the military is always under attack.
” I have observed that opposition parties are fond of accusing the incumbent of using the military to suppress it before, during and after elections, with the Army being the worst hit”.
” There is no doubt that this development is unhealthy for our nascent and growing democracy and nation building”. He reiterated.
He pleaded with Nigerians ad most especially politicians to see to it that the army is allowed to do its job.
“I am appealing to our political parties that as we go into the next general elections to leave the armed forces out of their build-up to the elections because the armed forces is not only the symbol of our national unity and cohesion, it is also the defender of our territorial integrity as its personnel sacrifice their comfort fo the collective peace of the country”.
Oba Makama canvassed for the support of all in order for our armed forces to achieve its mandate of protecting the nation.
” As I have said before now, our troops need our individual and concerted support through prayers and positive comments. A situation whereby there efforts are greeted with scornful remarks would naturally kill their morale and also incapacitate their spirit to fight and get desired results “.
He pleaded with fellow traditional rulers in the south eastern part of the country to prevail on Nnamdi Kanu so as to withdraw his boycott order on the election as that will definitely not be of help to the nation.
