Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State on Monday signed into law the bill to upgrade the state-owned Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) in Abeokuta to Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology, (MAUST).
While granting assent to the bill that was earlier passed by the State House of Assembly at the executive council meeting, the governor also signed into law the re-establishment of Ogun State Polytechnic in Ipokia in Yewa area of the state.
Amosun signed the bills during the state’s Executive Council meeting at the governor’s office in Abeokuta.
The governor further revealed that the institutions would be multi-campus, as government would engage think-tanks and academics to provide the technical guide for the successful take-off of the institutions so as to compete favourably with their contemporaries.
He also lauded the efforts of the State House of Assembly for the timely passage of the bill and assured that the necessary documents had been done and sent to the appropriate quarters.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that this is the highest honour bestowed on the late MKO Abiola, the winner of June 12, 1993 presidential poll, rated worldwide as one of the freest and best elections in the history of the country.
In an interview with newsmen after the occasion, Mr Suraj Adekunbi, the Speaker, said the House gave the bill accelerated passage because education is the priority of the government.
He noted that the establishment of the two institutions would create more jobs in the state.
