The Popular Kuto Market in Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital has been shutdown and market transaction halted following a picket action carried out by the management of the Ogun State Internal Revenue Service.
The halt in transaction at the market was a fall-out of a row between the market management and the Revenue Board over an alleged #10 milliion tax evasion by the market occupants and it’s management.
The traders of this popular market were left with no other option than displaying their wares on the road side for transaction as security personnel were readily on ground to enforce the directive.
The market which is known as where large quantity of goods which include plastics, household items, food stuffs, clothing etc.
It was gathered that the Revenue Board had on several occasions prevailed on the management to honour its responsibilities to the government but regretted that the subtle persuasion yielded no positive result which on the long run led to enforcement.
As it has been noted by the Ogun State Government led by Senator Ibikunle Amosun, CON, FCA that to positively impact on the lives of the people through well articulated programmes and it’s mission to rebuild Ogun State would amount to nothing when government fails to raise enough funds to fiance such project as prompt payment of tax will enable the government provide the necessary infrastructure and improve the standard of living of the people, but when people pay their taxes promptly, government is encouraged to do more.
The management of the market therefore used the medium to appeal to the State government on the matter as the action would affect business transaction as festive season is fast approaching.
