The Nigerian Youth Congress (NYC) in Osun State has reacted to the reported brawl between the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and some youths in Osogbo, the state capital on Tuesday.

The NYC, in a statement made available to AMILOADED on Wednesday morning, condemned “in totality the harassment, intimidation and unlawful arrest of youths by the security agents”.

The group further commended the Osun State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola, for dousing the tension and responding swiftly to the incident.

The statement read, “Attention of the Nigerian Youth Congress (NYC), Osun State Chapter has been drawn to the off-putting event that transpired between officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes be Commission (EFCC) and a set of youths during the wee hours of Tuesday in Osogbo, the state capital.

“As a youth focused group, we do not subscribe to touting, rioting and violence in any form. As a matter of fact, we acknowledge the effort of security agencies across the state and most importantly their sentient commitment to the peace and order that has been prevalent in the state.

“However, we condemn in totality the harassment, intimidation and unlawful arrest of youths by security agents as recorded in the recent event.

“The law is clear and straightforward as to the mode and manner of arrest and detention of suspects. Thus, we implore our security agents to desist from actions which are tantamount to violations of fundamental human rights and flagrant infraction of the Constitution.

“Consequently, we commend the State Government led by Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola for dousing the tension and responding swiftly to the occasion. We are hopeful that the State Government will continue to do her best in safeguarding lives and property.

“Also, we implore youths in Osun to remain calm and law abiding. As young citizens, we must eschew actions that are capable of disrupting the peace of our dear state.”
