The Osogbo Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association has demonstrated her support for the effort of the Chief Judge of the State of Osun, Hon. Justice Oyebola Adepele Ojo, towards improving the standard of civil litigation within Osun jurisdiction.
The branch expressed this support in a covering letter signed by the Assistant Secretary for the branch, Prince Olayemi Abiona while submitting memorandum containing amendments suggested by the branch in the Osun State High Court Amended (Civil Procedure) Rules 2008. The memorandum was submitted by the Assistant scribe at the Secretariat of the Committee Set up by the Chief Judge for the review of the Rules.
Also, while speaking to journalists in Osogbo during the week, the Publicity Secretary of the branch, Mr Abdulrahman Okunade said the civil litigation in Osun State would take a new but enviable dimension if the suggestions contained in the memorandum by the branch were adopted by the Review Committee.
“Our branch is populated by dazzling court room advocates who have had first hand experience of the very many shortcomings contained in the current Osun State High Court Civil Procedure Rules. And we have on our part submitted a comprehensive memorandum to that effect, hoping that the salient and forward-looking suggestions contained in the memorandum will be favourably considered by the committee”, the spokesman expressed the branch’s optimism.
“We also submitted a comprehensive proposal on the chargeable fees in the High Court, in consideration of the economic condition of the citizens and to further enhance unhindered access to justice. We trust that the eminent members of the committee will consider the utmost interest of the citizens in going about this historic assignment”, he concluded.
The 5-man Review Committee which is headed by a serving Judge of the Osun State High Court, Hon. Justice Moshood Adeigbe, has Prof. Ademola Popoola, Chief Adewuyi Adeyemo, Chief Yomi Alliyu, SAN and O.C. Ogbewe Esq. as members while a serving Magistrate in the State, Mr A. A. Adebayo serves as the Committee’s Secretary.
The Chief Judge is empowered under the High Court Law of Osun State to set up a committee to review the Rules whenever the exercise is found to be necessary.
The High Court Civil Procedure Rules of the State was last reviewed in 2008 before the appointment of the current Chief Judge as the number one judge for the State.
