A 21-year-old female student of Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki, Oyo State, Grace Oshiagwu, has been raped and murdered by unknown assailant(s) in Akinyele Local Government Area of the state.
SP Olugbenga Fadeyi, the Oyo State Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday in Ibadan.
Fadeyi said that the deceased was macheted on the head in a church building in Idi-ori area of Shasha, off Expressway, by unknown assailant at about 3 p.m. on Saturday.
The PPRO said that investigation into the death of the 21-year-old Oshiagwu had begun and the police tactical teams were on the trail of the assailant(s).
“While efforts have been intensified, we want to solicit for credible information from members of the communities around the area and the general public, to enable us to unravel the misery behind these dastard killings,” Fadeyi said.
He said that the corpse of the deceased had been deposited at Adeoyo State Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan, for autopsy.
Previous Incidents
It would be recalled that there have been frequent killings and rape cases in the Akinyele local government area of Ibadan in recent months.
An 18-year-old Barakat Bello was reportedly raped and killed on May 31, by unknown hoodlums.
Similarly, 29-year-old woman, Azeezat Shomuyiwa said to be seven months pregnant, was killed on June 5 in that axis.
Reactions
The incessant rape cases in Nigeria especially the reported cases at Akinyele Local Government in Ibadan, Oyo state have elicited massive reactions from top associations, on Twitter and other social media platforms.
While reacting, the leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Southwest has vowed to take take urgent steps against incessant raping and killings of female students in tertiary institutions.
The Public Relations Officer of NANS Southwest, Comrade Olatunji Nurudeen said: ” an ND1 Student of Oke Ogun Polytechnic Saki was raped and murdered at the residence of her parents, Idi Ori Sasa Ojoo, Akinyele Local government, Oyo state.
” We received the sad news about her extemporaneous demise when we were strictly planning on how to curb atrocious killing and raping of Students in our institutions.
“There’s no dissenting opinion about the fact that our female students are not to safe in Nigeria again.
“As this noxious scenario continue to increase in our institutions, we think it’s time to take fruitful actions that would end killing of female Students in Nigeria.
” Some days ago, we commiserated with the family and associates of a female student who was gang rapped, murdered and eventually killed. We are still living with the pains when we heard about the demise of another Student. Indeed, we are all bereaved.
“While we pray to God to give her family the grittiness to bear this irredeemable obliteration, we equally want to assure Nigerian Students that necessary steps would be taken in no distant time.”
Corroborating, the National Senate of the Federation of Oyo State Students Union, FOSSU, has condemned the “insane act” of rapists in the country.
This was disclosed in a press statement signed by Ajadi Isaac, FOSSU National Senate President on Sunday.
He described those who engage in such acts as “animalistic” because “real men don’t rape.”
According to him, “It is disheartening that rape has become an epidemic in Nigeria. Over the years, this insane act is not as a rampant as we have it today, hence the need for all hands to be on deck.
“Sequel to the recently rape and murder of some Students, FOSSU ational Senate writes to condemn such nefarious act currently emerging in our immediate environment.
“As we condemn such act, we also wish to caution men of all ages to say no to rape. It is undisputable that rape is carried out by animalistic persons and moreover, real men don’t rape,”
“Lawmakers at all levels to be prompt in making or amending rape-related laws and also ensure that the law has its full manifestation in every localities.”
“Our prayers and thought are with Miss Barakat and Grace Oshiagwu’s family.”
