Men Land In Osun Court For Allegedly Beating Police Officer, Threatening To Kill Him

The Osun State Police Command on Monday dragged two men, Opeyemi Popoola and Idowu Salami, before an Osun State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Osogbo for allegedly beating a police officer and also threatening to kill him.

The two suspects and others yet to be apprehended were also accused of attacking the officer, an Assistant Superintendent of Police identified as Adewale Adeleke, at his duty post in Oja-Oba police station, Osogbo.

The prosecutor, Razaq Olayiwola, had told the court that the men had been previously arraigned on September 10, 2020.

Olayiwola, who said the two men and others, yet to be arrested, had, between 8th and 9th September 2020, at Oja-Oba Police Station, attacked the police ASP and beat him up, also said the defendants also stole four pieces of male underwear from a trader, Francis Ezewere, and also threatened to kill him.

The offences were said to be contrary to and punishable under Sections 516, 390(9), 356(5), 86(1), and 451 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

When the six counts pressed against them by the police were read to them, the defendants pleaded not guilty.

Mr. Kehinde Adepoju, who had earlier announced appearance for the defendants, urged the court to sustain the bail enjoyed by the two men and the prosecutor did not oppose the application.

While ruling, the magistrate, Mr. Asimiyu Adebayo, ruled that the defendants should continue to enjoy conditions of their previous bail.

He, however, adjourned the case till Wednesday, September 8, 2021 for hearing.
