Lockdown: Controversy Trails Osun Govt’s Free Rice As Residents Express Mixed Feelings

Some residents of Osun state,  who benefited from the rice distributed by the state government as part of measures to cushion the effect of the lockdown have expressed mixed feelings over the stimulus package.

While some have praised the state government for deeming it fit to provide foodstuff for the continuous sustenance of citizens, others alleged that the rice they were given was of bad quality.

Some of the residents  claimed that the rice was substandard,  while others at polling units where the package was shared commended the efforts of the government and expressed satisfaction.

A cross section of the beneficiaries, who spoke with AMILOADED correspondent argued that the rice that was brought to their polling unit was  of bad acolour and odour.

Some , however other beneficiaries at some polling units visited  were grateful for the provision but complained that the rice would not be enough for them.

A resident at his ward  explained that residents at some communities were happy to receive the stimulus package but  that the quantity was small.

“I am  satisfied with the rice in my unit. The two bags were divided among the  communities that surrounded the polling unit and people appreciated the efforts of the government but   the quantity is small”,.she said.

But speaking in Yoruba language, a resident from another polling unit said “the government gave us poor rice.

” It appears they brought this rice to share because it has already expired.

” We dont  expect this from our government. It is better not to have anything to eat than to eat what we kill one. This is bad and poor”

Recall that Governor Oyetola had said at the flag off of the distribution of the palliative that the rice would be distributed to residents, especially the indigent ones.

Reacting to the issue in Ile -ife,  a chieftain of the APC in Osun, Hon Rotimi Makinde said it was not good that some persons rubbished Governor Oyetola’s good gesture.

He advised that palliative of this nature should be made available for residents in cash and not by giving them foodstuffs.

“The governor must have delegated somebody to handle the purchase and the distribution.

”  I will honestly call on the governor to make public the contractor or supplier of such rice that is giving the governor the name he never deserved.

” This is more reason why the palliative should have been made in cash,” Makinde noted
