Illegal Mining: Oyetola Inaugurates MIREMCO, Describes It Step To Lift Osun Out Of Economic Misery

Osun State Governor, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, on Wednesday, inaugurated the Osun Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO), AMILOADED reports.

The inauguration by Oyetola was held at the Exco Lounge in Abeere, Osogbo, the Osun state capital.

The governor, who described the inauguration as step towards sanitising the state’s resource climate, said, “The inauguration of Osun Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee is another major steps towards lifting our state out of economic misery and redefining and shoring up our socioeconomic life as a state.

“The appointment and inauguration of this committee are in line with the Nigeria Minerals and Mining Act 2007, which empowers the committee to oversee the regulation of the entire mining operations in the State and to discuss and advise the Minister of Solid Minerals on matters affecting encroachment, trespass, security, social unrest, pollution and environmental degradation of any land on which any mineral is being extracted as it relates to all license holders within the state.”

Oyetola continued, “The inauguration of Osun MIREMCO today is a step towards sanitising the state’s resource climate and resolving the extant challenges being faced on the mining sites and the affected communities.

“This path will ultimately set Osun on the path of effective resource management, we have assembled men and women of character,” the governor said.

Oyetola, while speaking on the challenge of environmental degradation arising from lack of environmental and ecological literacy on the part of the local communities coupled with irresponsible and unprofessional mining by both licensed and illegal miners, urged MIREMCO to remediate this situation by educating and sensitizing the people on ecological literacy through town hall and media interventions.

The governor further called on the federal environmental agencies such as NESREA to live up to their duty of enforcing environmental standards and compliance in mining sector.

On his part, the chairman of the committee, Prince Omolade Binuyo, said MIREMCO will ensure responsible mining practices which are environmentally sustainable and change narrative of mining from chaos to smooth activity.
