The National Publicity Secretary of the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin died on Saturday as a result of COVID-19 complications.
Below are what you should know about the late activist:
1. Yinka Odumakin was born on World’s Human Rights Day, December 10.
2. Odumakin graduated from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in 1989.
3. While in school, he served as the public relations officer of the university’s students union.
4. Odumakin started his journalism career at The PUNCH newspapers before he moved to The Guardian newspapers.
5. He was part of the National Democratic Coalition that fought the regime of late military head of state, General Sani Abacha, after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election.
6. He was part of the 492-member National Conference which held in Abuja in 2014.
7. The President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him as the spokesman for his 2011 presidential campaign.
8. Odumakin was married to a fellow activist, Joe Okei-Odumakin till his death.
9. He also served as the Secretary of the Save Nigeria Group convened by Pastor Tunde Bakare in 2010.
10. Until his death, he was spokesman for Afenifere and had been vocal about condemning the activities of killer herdsmen in the South West.
