A former employee, Wilson Roosevelt Jerman, at the White House who served as a butler under 11 different presidents has died of coronavirus at the age of 91.
He retired in 2012. NBC News reports that he was one of the longest-serving workers at the government house and was very much remembered by former President Gorge W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush in a statement on Wednesday, May 21.
“He was a lovely man. He was the first person we saw in the morning when we left the residence and the last person we saw each night when we returned,” the Bushes said.
The late 91-year-old man had a cordial relationship with people during his service.
According to Jerman’s granddaughter, Jamila Garret, the 91-year-old man started as a cleaner in 1957 under the Eisenhower administration before he got his promotion during the Kennedy presidency.
Jamila added that Jerman built relationships in the White House that were helpful to him throughout his career.
“Jackie O actually promoted him to a butler because of the relationship. She was instrumental in ensuring that that happened,” she explained.
The granddaughter also said that he was a family man who so much gave himself to service to others. It should be noted that the late dedicated worker’s photo with Barack and Michelle Obama was published inside the first lady’s memoir, Becoming.
“I want the world to remember my grandfather as someone who was really authentic. Always being yourself. That’s what he taught our family, that’s what thrives throughout our family. And that’s what we’ll continue to carry on, his legacy,” the granddaughter added.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Maria Branyas, a 113-year-old woman, believed to be the oldest person in Spain, said that she feels very much okay after surviving the deadly coronavirus.
In a video interview, the centenarian said that she feels just like any normal human being with feelings like everyone.
