A former female teacher at C.E. King High School in Sheldon, Texas, has been charged with two counts of sexual assault of a child under 17 years of age.
Katrina Maxwell began the sexual relationship with the 16-year-old student during spring break in March and April this year.
Court records state the education district became aware of the relationship between Maxwell and the student when another employee noticed the teacher’s odd behaviour towards the student whenever she saw him with his girlfriend.
The same employee also reported another incident in which Maxwell is alleged to have thrown a pair of scissors at the student’s head when she saw him sitting next to his girlfriend.
An investigation was launched and, according to police, Maxwell has admitted to having sex twice with the student in the back seat of her car.
But when the teenage student was interviewed about the allegations, he reportedly told investigators that the pair had sex a number of times between March and April.
Sheldon Independent School District said Maxwell was fired after apparently admitting she was having an improper relationship with the student.
The school district said in a statement that it was made aware of the “inappropriate relationship between former Sheldon ISD teacher Mrs. Katrina Maxwell and a Sheldon ISD high school student.”
It continues: “Once district administration was notified, the teacher was immediately removed from the school campus, and the district notified law enforcement as well as Child Protective Services (CPS).
“The district has conducted a thorough investigation and upon completion, we find these reports to be substantiated.”
It concludes: “The district’s first concern is always the safety of our students while providing a safe and secure place for students to learn. Sheldon ISD is deeply saddened that this occurred, and we are committed to continued cooperation with law enforcement to ensure Mrs. Maxwell is prosecuted to the fullest extent.”
Maxwell was arrested and her bond was set at $20,000 (£14,300).
