The Police have arrested a Pastor, Isaac Akinbola, 50, on suspicion of engaging two women to beat his wife which resulted in the death of their eight-month-old baby, Obadiah Akinbola.
It was learnt that the baby fell off her mother’s arm during the scuffle, hit a hard surface and suffered an internal injury.
The baby was taken to a hospital but died while receiving treatment.
The incident happened in Mamu area of Ijebu, Ogun State, on March 27.
The two women – Esther Olowolayemo, 29, and Oluwakemi Oshinbajo, 30 – suspected of jointly assaulting Mrs. Adesola Akinbola, have also been arrested.
The suspects were arrested by detectives from Awa Ijebu divisional headquarters after the pastor’s wife, Dasola Akinbola, reported that she had been having a disagreement with her pastor-husband over alleged illicit affairs with some female members of the church.
She told detectives that the pastor-husband stormed her residence at Ipinle area of Mamu Ijebu in the company of two women, whom she suspected of having illicit affair with her husband.
According to her, the two women attacked and beat her up.
She narrated that while they were beating her, her eight-month-old baby, Obadiah Akinbola, fell down even as her husband prodded the assailants to step up the attack until she was thoroughly beaten.
Police spokesperson in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the Divisional Police Officer for Awa Ijebu division, Adewalehinmi Joshua, ordered the arrest of the three suspects, while the woman and her baby were taken to Mamu Jebu health centre for medical care.
“The woman and the baby were later referred to Blessed Hospital Oru Ijebu where it was discovered that the baby had an internal injury which he sustained when he fell off his mother’s hands during the scuffle.
“The child gave up the ghost on the 28th of March 2022 while receiving treatment as a result of the internal injury.
“The remains of the child have been deposited at the General Hospital Ijebu Igbo mortuary for autopsy,” Abimbola said.
The Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has ordered the transfer of the suspects to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for investigation with the view of arraigning them in court.
