Don Expresses Worry Over Quality Of Candidates Admitted Into Colleges Of Education

Prof. Oguntola Alamu, a former acting Vice Chancellor of Osun State University, Osogbo, has expressed worry over the way less qualified candidates were being considered for admission at Colleges of Education in Nigeria.

Alamu made the remarks while delivering the 2019 Annual Lecture organized by the National Association of Ola-Oluwa Local Government Students (NAOS) in Asamu.

The public lecture was organised in honour of Lt.-Gen. Lamidi Adeosun, the Chief of Policy and Plans, Nigeria Army Headquarters, Abuja. Alamu said those who were being considered for admission at colleges of education were candidates with low scores who could not secure admission into the Universities or the Polytechnics.

 The don said the colleges of education where teachers were supposed to be professionally educated are now dominated by less academically endowed candidates. “If the situation is not addressed, soon, your children and mine will be taught by less academically endowed teachers. “They would be counselled and guided by less academically endowed Counsellors and they would be mentored by less academically endowed Lecturers”, Alamu said.

The don said if nothing is done, the teaching profession would be dominated by less academically endowed individuals and the continent may be plunged back to the old dark days”.

He, however, said that there was urgent need to revamp colleges of education in the country by admitting only brilliant candidates, who will take teaching profession seriously.

 In his remarks, Lt. -Gen. Lamidi Adeosun described the lecture as a thought-provoking and remarkable one. Adeosun urged policy makers to consider the salient points raised by the guest lecturers.

He condemned the idea of scraping of Teachers’ Grade II programme in Nigeria’s educational system, saying it was ill-conceived , eroding the quality of Teachers in Nigeria. Adeosun commended the organisers for the award given to him.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the event, Hon. Justice Oyejide Falola commended the organiser of the lecture for a job well done. In his remarks, NAOS President, Comrade Olabode Jeremiah Oyeyemi, appreciated the guest lecturer for exposing the weaknesses in colleges of education in Nigeria.
