A Sociopolitical Organization, Asiwaju Grassroots Foundation (AGF), Osun State chapter, has charged eligible voters in the state, to participate effectively in the ongoing continuous voter registration to avoid disenfranchisement during the September 22 Osun governorship election and the 2019 general elections.
The group gave the charge on Friday in a press statement jointly signed by its coordinator, Comrade Sikiru Tijani and Secretary, Comrade Yahaya Adeniji and made available to newsmen in Osogbo.
The group urged residents from 18 years of age, who have not obtained their PVCs to take advantage of the on-going voters’ registration exercise to register at the INEC designated centre nearest to them
While emphasizing the need for the residents to take the advantage of the
one day public holiday declared by the state government so as to earn them the ample opportunity to participate, the group hinted that the only weapon the electorate can use to selecte their preferred candidate during elections was their voter cards.
“We want to appeal to residents of the state of Osun on the need to take the advantage of the one day work free day declared by our amiable governor to troop out to the designated INEC office nearest to them to get registered”.
“We are determined to ensure that all eligible voters in Osun, who have not registered with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the on-going voters’ registration exercise do so and collect their Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs).
“The essence of the public holiday as we all know is to provide ample opportunity for eligible voters to participate in the exercise by registering with INEC and as well collect their Permanent Voter Card (PVC) for them to be able to perform their civic responsibility when election comes.
“Voter Registration and collection of permanent Voters card (PVC) are important and strategic to electoral process and has capability of strengthening democratic governance”.
“We are appealing to the people to go out and register in the remaining days, while those who have lost or defaced their cards can register afresh but should guard against registering twice as each person is only allowed to register once. ” the group added
It would be recalled that the state government under the leadership of Governor Rauf Aregbesola had earlier declared Monday April 16, a work free day for the formal and informal workers of the state in order to give them the ample opportunity to participate in the registration exercise.
The Continuous Voter Registration had started on Wednesday, April 11 and will end on Monday, April 16.
