BREAKING: Senate Gives Fresh Order To IGP Over Invasion Of Justice Odili’s House

The Senate on Tuesday urged the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, to publish the outcome of his investigation into the invasion of the residence of a Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Mary Odili.

Security operatives had on October 29 invaded the Abuja residence of the justice, an action seen by many as an affront on the judiciary arm of government.

The police boss has ordered an investigation into the raid.

“The IGP has directed the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB) to conduct a discreet investigation into the incident. He assured the commitment of the Force to the safety and security of the members of the Judiciary and Nigerians in general,” said a statement by Frank Mba, force public relations officer.

The Senate’s intervention followed a motion on urgent national importance sponsored by Senator Betty Apiafi (PDP, Rivers), who urged the Senate to condemn the invasion and commended the IGP for setting up an investigative panel.

The Upper Chamber also urged the Police Chief to make public the outcome of the investigation.

The Senate also condemned the invasion in strong terms and described it as a breach of the Justice’s privacy.

Senator Apiafi, in her motion, expressed concern that eleven days after the invasion, details of the arrest by the Police in respect of the inaction are still sketchy.

Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti), who chairs the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, said the parliament must ensure that all those responsible are brought to book.

The legislature, he said, should also ensure that government make efforts to protect judges and other judicial officers.
