Darlington Odume, a legal practitioner, has been shot dead in Imo State.
Odume, popularly known as Omekagu was murdered at the parking lot of a supermarket at Amaifeke in Orlu, in the Orlu Local Government Area of the state, on Thursday.
The incident came just 24 hours after some gunmen murdered the priest-in-charge of St Andrew’s Anglican Church IhitteUkwa in Orsu local government area of the state, Rev. Emeka Merenu.
Odume, a native of Umudara village in Amaifeke- Orlu, was called to the Nigerian bar five years ago.
The lawyer, who practised in Orlu, was said to be the attorney to some of those arrested in connection with the violence rocking the area.
An eye witness said, “The victim was rushed to a hospital in the area, but he was rejected and referred to the Imo State University Teaching Hospital, Orlu, but died on the way to the teaching hospital.”
The Interim Committee chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Precious Nwadike, who hails from Orlu, told newsmen that the entire community was devastated by the assassination.
The journalist, who called on the security operatives to fish out the killers, called on the government ensure that lives and property were secured.
The police spokesperson for the state, Micheal Abattam, confirmed the killing.
He said the state commissioner of police, Rabiu Hussaini, had ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.
