Amotekun: Osun Lawmaker, Irekandu Advocates For Indigenes’ Recruitment For Safer Community Policing

A lawmaker, Hon Adewumi Adeyemi Irekandu, representing Obokun State constituency in the Osun State House of Assembly, has advocated for the inclusion and recruitment of indigenes of communities in the state for Operation Amotekun.

This method, he said would bring about safer community policing that would tackle insecurity headlong.

Irekandu made this known on Thursday while reacting to the policy trust of the Amotekun Corp Bill in the floor of the House.

He said communities will be safer when members of these communities are allowed to take part in the security framework of their localities.

Irekandu who expressed his joy and unwavering support while speaking on the bill stated that his constituency, Obokun has practically tasted in the share of insecurity in the nation.

Irekandu further revealed that the present structure in our nation has not been able to solve the problem of insecurity. Hence, a need for a working structure.

He said “every effective Leadership structure must contain other independent leadership structure.

“A community is best policed by the members of the community. This is because members of the community understand and know the terrain of their communities better,” he insisted.

The lawmaker cited a kidnapping incident that occurred in his constituency last year and how it was foiled through the support of local security adding that “we recorded a kidnapping incident which took place in Imesi-Ile, an ancient town in my Constituency last year. The incident was foiled among other things because of the swiftness of the local security who understands their Community.”

Irekandu expressed confidence that If Amotekun bill is passed and made a law, it will help in reducing insecurity and build effective community policing.

Meanwhile, a public hearing on the bill has been announced by the speaker and Hon Irekandu is a member of the organising committee. The public hearing is slated to hold on Monday, February 24th.
