Alleviate Poverty To Strengthen Democracy In Nigeria, Group Charges FG

A development group, Centre for Sustained Dialogue has called on the Federal Government to alleviate poverty to strengthen democracy in the country, AMILOADED reports.

The group made this known in a statement issued by the Director of Program, Comrade Waheed Saka, in Osogbo, the Osun State capital on Wednesday.

According to the group, “ A healthy democracy is where the people live decently and peacefully but the pains and pangs among our people is a fundamental threat to our democracy.

“As the world is celebrating today international day of democracy, and Nigeria 22years of uninterrupted democracy, the threat is not the terrorist attack , the kidnapping by bandits or even the agitation by self determination group but poverty in the midst of plenty, our government must drop the cosmetic approach to eradicate poverty to safeguard our democracy.”

The group added that a healthy democracy will no doubt guaranty freedom, respect for human rights and the principle of holding free fair and credible elections.

“We all have a role to play either as citizen and government, for this government of the people by the people and for the people to thrive and sustained, poverty must be reduced to zero,” the group stated.
