The Governorship Candidate of Restoration Party during the last election in Osun state, Mrs Mercy Ayodele has described the arrest and detention of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke as an attempt to intimidate and silence opposition voices in the country.
In a statement signed by Mrs Ayodele in Osogbo, the Restoration party’s candidate noted that such act was a manifestation of intolerant political leadership using state apparatus to intimidate its citizens, most especially those who have mass support to change the status quo.
Mrs Ayodele pointed out that it was on record that the issue over which senator Adeleke was arrested was already an issue in litigation and would be prejudicial to arrest and arraign him over same offence .
She argued that it was unknown to any of Nigeria law that an individual could stand trial on same offence in two different courts almost at the same time.
The politician who noted that the issue might not be unconnected with the ongoing litigation on Osun state governorship election before the appeal court urged president Mohammadu Buhari to “thread softly on the Osun state political imbroglio, act as a statesman indeed and not a party man, as the whole world is watching with keen interest ongoing political development in Nigeria”
Mr Ayodele again reaffirmed her conviction in the capacity of the Nigeria judiciary to stabilise the polity through fair, unbiased and equitable decisions.
” I’m resolute about my belief that Nigeria has one of the finest judicial institutions in the world, peopled by men and women of good conscience who would not allow the perpetuation of illegality, abuse if court process and abuse of executive powers,” she said.
She however urged residents of Osun State to remain law abiding and allow the due process of law to run its course.
According to her, the Restoration Party is convinced that Nigeria would evolve into a nation where equity, fair play and justice are the order of the day in the relationship between government and its people, adding that citizens work towards this goal.
