JUST IN: Kwara Govt Takes Another Action Over Brutal Flogging Of Arabic Students

The Kwara State Government has taken another action by setting up a 10-man committee to investigate the circumstances around the torture of some students of Madrasah Arabic school, Ganmo area of Ifelodun Local Government Area of the State by the school management.

The committee set up by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq has retired Justice Idris Haroon, as the chairman.

The committee has one week to submit its report, beginning from the first sitting, according to the spokesman to the governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, in a statement in Ilorin on Tuesday.

AMILOADED recalls that a video footage of some students of the school being flogged including a female alleged to have committed offences contrary to the rules of the school, went viral attracting wide range of condemnations in Nigeria and across the globe.

They were flogged and sustained bodily injuries. Some students acting on the directive of the principal of the school carried out the act.

The principal, who has been suspended by the government, pending the conclusion of the investigation into the incident, had said he acted with the consent of the parents of the affected students.

The terms of reference of the committee include meeting with the affected students, their parents and the school authorities on the circumstances surrounding the corporal punishment meted out to them, following the students’ organisation and participation in a birthday party, alleged consumption of alcohol and publication of the video footage of same on the social media.

The committee will also review the reward and disciplinary methods in such schools and make recommendations to the government on how to prevent reoccurrence of such in the state.
