Afghan President Lands In UAE As Taliban Widens Its Grip Over His Country

President Ashraf Ghani, who fled Afghanistan as Taliban aimed for the presidential palace, has resurfaced in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The president and his family members were welcomed in UAE at a time the Taliban subjected Afghans to torture.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said Ghani and his family got into the country on humanitarian grounds.

The Taliban declared the war in Afghanistan was over after insurgents took control of the presidential palace in Kabul on August 15.

The group gained control after US-led forces departed and Western nations evacuated their citizens.
The US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 ousted the insurgents from power, but they never left.

In a Facebook post after his departure, Ghani said he believed “countless patriots would be martyred and the city of Kabul would be destroyed” if he had stayed behind.
