Igbajo Education Committee Holds One-Day Education Summit, Rolls Out Plans To Develop Schools

The Igbajo Education Committee, one of the working entities of Igbajo Development Association (IDA), has organised a one-day Education Summit, tagged “Igbajo Community Education Summit” (ICES), AMILOADED reports.

The Summit, which had “Giving Every Child an Equal Opportunity to Succeed” as its theme was held at Prof. Ademola Adesina Hall, Owa’s palace, Igbajo under the chairmanship of Asiwaju of Igbajo land, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo SAN, on Tuesday.

According to a statement Recieved by AMILOADED correspondent  from the Chairman of Igbajo Education Committee, Dr. Demola Onifade, the objective of the Summit was to provide a platform to appropriately address and proffer workable solutions to the deteriorating standard of education in the community, at the primary and secondary school levels, with particular reference to infrastructural decay, human resource deficiency and inadequacy of sports facilities.

The Summit was also to set short, medium and long term attainable agenda to reform the Community education system.

The well-attended Summit with representation of critical stakeholders, notably, teachers, school heads, community leaders, members of the academia, policy makers, parents, pupils and students witnessed presentation of addresses, goodwill messages, papers and lectures, all of which addressed the issues at stake.

The IDA stated, “Having considered all presentations of the main speakers and contributions from various participants, including Igbajo sons and daughters in diaspora, who followed the proceedings which were live-streamed via Zoom and Facebook, it was resolved that:

“Igbajo Education Committee (IEC), operating under the umbrella of Igbajo Development Association (IDA), shall be responsible for the implementation of all Education Development Programmes of Igbajo Community;

“Community involvement in the development of education at the primary school level shall be by direct intervention while in the case of secondary schools, it shall be in collaboration with old students of the schools;

“The strategy for infrastructural upgrade in both the public primary and secondary schools shall be through the ‘Adopt-a-Classroom Scheme’ as articulated by IDA;

“Maintenance of infrastructural facilities shall be through local facility managers that shall periodically audit the facilities;

“An already inaugurated Special Purpose Committee shall source for fund to renovate the Community Public library while the IDA shall equip Kiriji Memorial College (KMC) library in collaboration with the College Revival Group and also collaborate with old students of the Community High School to build and stock a new library in the School;

“Annual Chief Olajide Oyewole Cups, Male and Female football competitions shall be organized among five secondary schools by an already inaugurated Igbajo Sports Commission (ISC);

“Annual Asiwaju Adegboyega Awomolo Cup Football competition among primary schools in Igbajoland shall be organized by ISC;

“ISC shall run igbajo Sport Academy which shall be established by IDA and also periodically organize sports competition for primary and secondary schools in Igbajoland;

“Igbajo Scholarship Scheme (ISS) for exceptional primary school pupils and secondary school students as well as Igbajo Outstanding Teachers’ Awards (IOTA) for dedicated primary and secondary school teachers in Igbajoland shall be managed by (IEC);

“Career guidance/counseling programmes shall be periodically organized for students of secondary schools;

“Reorientation/sensitization of pupils/students and their parents to the value of education shall be carried out periodically;

“Pupils/students shall be exposed to entrepreneurship with a view to ensuring that they start early to prepare themselves for self-employment later in life;

“Multi-level monitoring machinery shall be put in place in order to ensure effective and efficient service delivery by teachers and responsible learning by pupils/students;

“Cordial, responsible and beneficial teacher-learner relationship is in place as a way of enhancing learning by pupils/students;

“Mass media, ward-by-ward and family-by-family advocacy on the importance of education shall be regularly embarked upon within the community;

“Teacher-parent relationship shall be encouraged with a view to jointly monitoring academic progress of the pupils/students;

“Collaborative efforts shall be made to provide functional Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities with appropriate resource persons in all schools with a view to ensuring that pupils/students are proficient in the use of and take full advantage of the benefits of same;

“Regular data gathering on the academic progress of pupils/students and other key indices for effective planning and decision-making purposes shall be embarked upon;

“Practical agriculture, with each pupil/student having his/her personal plot, for both teaching and food sufficiency purposes shall be pursued;

“All schools in igbajoland shall be model citadels of learning and

“All critical stakeholders shall jointly set short, medium and long term attainable agenda to reform the Community education system using the resolutions of this Summit as the template,” the statement read.
