The Muslim community was thrown into confusion as the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh AbdulGaniyu Agbotomokekere on Wednesday performed Eid prayer at the Ibadan Central Eid praying ground, Agodi.
Deputy Governor Rauf Olaniyan and Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji were some of the dignitaries at the prayer ground.
It was also observed the Eid prayer ground was well attended but lower compared with the usual busy activities at the ground.
The reason, it was gathered, was because some faithful are still observing the fast.
Similarly, a renowned Islamic Scholar, Sheik Dahiru Usman Bauchi, conducted Eid prayers on Wednesday.
Eid prayers was however held at the Bauchi residence of Sheik Bauchi on Wednesday.
One of the cleric’s children, Tijjani Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, led the congregation with the cleric in attendance.
But after Wednesday prayers at his residence, Sheikh Bauchi said the moon of the month of Shawwal was sighted on Tuesday.
He said the moon was seen in places such as Gombe, Gadau and Kebbi.
“Based on these reports that the moon was sighted, what is said by two righteous people when they see it is enough for us people, or a large crowd.”
“That is why we have now come to perform the Eid prayers because the month of Ramadan is over, the month of Shawwal has arrived.”
This is against the directive of Alhaiji Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, who asked Muslims in the country to continue fast on Wednesday.
Sultan, the spiritual head of Muslims in the country, had declared Thursday, May 13, 2021, as the day of Salat and the first day of Shawwal.
The development, has however, raised comments, as some Muslim faithful that spoke with AMILOADED correspondent in Ibadan, observed that the decision of the the Chief Imam of Ibadanland to observe the Eid-el-fitr on Wednesday was not in line with the rules of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.
