Transport workers across the southwest have appealed to Osun State Governor Gboyega Oyetola, Federal Controller of Works, Osun and the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola to assist in the repair of the deplorable state of Gbongan-Ode Omu-Osogbo road to reduce accident on the axis.
The chairman of the South West Zone of the Nigeria Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO Chairman Alhaji Bola Ogunyele revealed this on behalf of the transport workers.
Alhaji Ogunyele, who spoke to reporters in Lagos said the bad roads have negative effects on socio-economy of transporters.
He said members spent huge amount of money in repairing and replacing damaged parts of their vehicles after plyingthe road.
Alhaji Ogunyele emphasised that the road is now a death trap for everybody, adding that some criminals have taken advantage of the bad road to unleash mahem and dispose people of their goods and valuables.
The Chairman said NARTO members would be happy should the relevant authorities intervene and rehabilitate the road for the good of all road users.
Alhaji Ogunyele said: “I want to appeal to Osun State Governor, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola, the Federal Comptroller of Works for Osun State, Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola that there is need for them to do something about Gbongan-Ode Omu-Osogbo road”.
Alhaji Ogunyele quoted Mrs. Agnes Ogungbemi, the Osun State Spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Commission as saying in a public gathering with stakeholders that in January, 194 people were involved in road accidents while 112 people sustained various degree of injuries and 15 people died due to road crashes on Gbongan-Ode Omu-Osogbo road.
He praised the efforts of men of the Osun State Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) for their dedication and prompt response to accidents which has reduced accident.
Alhaji Ogunyele, “I commended the efforts of the road safety commander in the state for giving such report aimed at calling attention of road users to be cautious and mindful of bad road.
He said the regular intervention and orientation of FRSC officials had gone a long way in cautioning motorists and other road users in exercise caution on the deplorable state of the road.
Alhaji Ogunyele said the deplorable state of roads in South West was one of the causes of the accident pointed out that Gbongan-Ode Omu-Osogbo road serve as a link for farmers in the movement of goods and farm produce to the other parts of the country.
