FSI Visits Schools In Osun, Calls For End To Female Genital Mutilation

In a bid to end the female genital mutilation in Osun State, the Osun province for Future Shakers Initiative(FSI), a non governmental organization, on Friday, visited two schools in Osogbo, the Osun State capital for a FGM school outreach programme.

The schools include Osogbo Grammar School and Winners Model College, both in Osogbo.

According to FSI, the outreach programme was in line with the persistency of Female Genital Mutilation in some part of the world and in commeration of international day of zero tolerance for female genital Mutilation which will be celebrated on  6th of February, 2021.

While speaking to AMILOADED, Tayo Olutimehin, FSI Director of projects and operations, said that the essence of the programme was to give them a background knowledge about FGM and to discourage the practice.

He said, “The adverse effect of FGM isn’t only a result from the pain. FGM can lead to infections, death from excessive bleeding, infertility, menstrual disorders, depression and difficulty during child birth.”

“The practice of FGM doesn’t only occur in African countries, it happens  in almost every part of the world.”

Olutimehin further stated that in 2015, under the presidency of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, FGM became a criminal act punishable under the law and advised the students to caution anybody caught in the act.

He added that FGM should be eradicated as the practice has no health benefits for girls and women.

The students, on their part, expressed appreciation for the enlightenment and affirmed their readiness to spread anti female genital mutilation in their community.
